Cheltenham Trials and Tattersalls HIT Sale

Newsletter #35

The February sale at Tattersalls has over 400 catalogued lots with a mixture of all types of bloodstock. Most notably is,of course, the Shadwell dispersal which is catching the eye of every bloodstock enthusiast around the globe. Two year olds by stallions such as Sea the Stars, Lope de Vega and Dubawi from top class families will certainly be of huge interest.
Along with young horses, there is a plethora of largely unexposed horses in training, many of which provided wonderful success for our trainer George Boughey and Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock in recent sales. Party on Girl (below) has won 2 from 3 having exchanged hands in October. Al Ameen (or big Al) has also won and Dubai Lady won first time out after spending a mere three weeks at Saffron House. All were bought for 20,000 guineas or less!

George brings a draft of 18 to the sale including our own syndicate filly Medal of Glory who has had one run for George so far. By in large, she has disappointed us and while we do feel she has the potential to win a race (and hopefully does before her sales engagement!), the majority vote within the syndicate is to sell. That being said, she’s fit, healthy and looks great in the winter sun below.

Charlie talks…Festival clues on offer

Cheltenham hosts its last action today ahead of the festival and plenty of horses will be looking to lay down a marker for March.

The Paddy Power Cotswold Chase offers Chantry House an oppourtunity to redeem himself after a poor run in the King George. While he is not a betting proposition tomorrow it may be worth taking some of the 20/1 on offer currently for the Gold Cup as his odds will shorten significantly if he comes through this test with flying colours as expected.

Champ is out to cement his positon at the head of the market for the stayers hurdle and again while not a betting propostion tomorrow is expected to come through this test.

The most interesting race of the day for me is the Classic Novices' Hurdle at 3.40. Hillcrest carries a huge reputation into this and has impressed greatly in all his starts so far. However he does have to give weight away and connections are mooting that they may prefer softer ground. With that in mind I think he may be vunerable and while the main danger appears to be the Nicky Henderson trained Balco Coastal I’m really drawn to the Donald Mccain trained A Different Kind.

He has been thrashing poor opposition up north for a while now. However one of those opponets was Green Book. Green Book was well fancied off a mark of 130 to land a competitive hurdle on his latest start before unseating. I believe connections reckon he is much better than his mark of 130. A Different Kind is offically rated 132 and at the moment no one really knows if he is up to that. However looking at his performances so far and the potential for improvement with this stiffer test I think odds of 9/1 are way too big for him to cause an upset here.

Elsewhere on the card Jacamar looks a fair bet to follow up his latest win at Kempton in the 2 mile 4 PP podcast chase. He came from off a strong pace the last day and looks like he may have a bit more up his sleeve from the handicapper. Also crucially if he is to have any aspirations of getting into one of the handicap chases at the festival he may need to win to go up a few pounds to get in.

Away from Cheltenham I really can’t understand how Do Your Job is not clear favourite ahead of Third Time Lucki in the 1.35 Novices’ Chase at Doncaster. He was a progressive novice hurdler but always looked a chaser in the making. He had a fortuitous win on his chase debut and was very unlucky to fall on his 2nd start. Then was no match for Edwardstone on his latest start. However with a clear round he should be able to take care of his other two rivals here.
