Let’s Celebrate at Goodwood
Newsletter #19
George talks…BBT Digest
Here are some interesting pieces we have come across this week.
What I have been watching…..Canada’s Horse Northern Dancer
This is a golden oldie. The little strokes of luck along Northern Dancer’s journey from the smallest foal in the field to seeding the greatest paternal dynasty of the modern thoroughbred. Production quality is a little dated but the story and insights from those closest to the horse are incredible. The team around the horse were astonishingly going to at one stage going to geld the horse. Just imagine that!!
A McEntee in America
Meet Paul McEntee, brother of Phil McEntee who is training successfully in the UK. Paul has a great story of how he navigated his horse training business from having one horse to turning cheap yearlings into winners.
The Paulick Report with Taylor Made Presents…Mike Repole
Continuing the American flavour of the newsletter this week this is a podcast recorded from 2017. Mike Repole was steeped in sport and grew up in Queens, New York. He built up his own beverage business and sold out for a reported $4 billion. That’s when he kicked off his next passion, owning racehorses. One of the most prominent owners in America campaigning champions and now stallions such as Outwork, Uncle Mo and Stay Thirsty. An amazing story from an interesting owner who describes the patience needed to succeed in thoroughbred racing and his inversion of the 80/20 rule for racing.
Syndicate News
Medal of Glory came out of her Dundalk barrier trial bouncing. A day at the beach and back into cantering she is nearing a run in the very near future.
Several horses have run with merit from Medal of Glory’s Newmarket breeze up sale in recent weeks. The stand out thus far has been Taj Alriyadh from the Karl Burke yard. He is 3 from 3 and holds an entry in the Mill Reef in September.
With sales in mind we have important sales dates upcoming. Yearling sales season is now upon us and we will be active at:
Tattersalls Sommerville Yearling Sale
Tattersalls September Yearling Sale
Goffs Orby and Sportsman Yearling Sale
Tattersalls October Book 2/3/4 Yearling Sales
We will be working the sales ground to unearth horses for our 2022 2 year old roster. If you want to get involved be sure to keep your eyes peeled here and on our twitter page over the coming weeks.
Charlie talks…Weekend Racing
Goodwood hosts the main group domestic action this weekend with the Group 2 Celebration Mile the highlight on the card.
This race looks a solid opportunity for Chindt to get his head back in front after three gallant efforts at Group 1 level.
In the Group 3 prestige stakes for 2yr olds Clitheroe looks to strike at group level for her sire Ribchester. She made a very encouraging debut and while this is a step up in class she should get involved in the finish here.
Meanwhile today the Curragh hosts an interesting 8 race card with the Irish Cambridgeshire the highlight for me.
Another tricky puzzle to solve but Noel Meade’s Luke Short has long stood out to me as an ideal type for a race like this. He ticks plenty of boxes and at odds of 20/1 looks worth supporting each way here.
Horses to follow:
Luke Short - 6.45pm - The Curragh - Friday
Clitheroe - 1.50pm - Goodwood - Saturday
Chindit - 3.35pm - Goodwood - Saturday
