BBT Digest

Here are three points on the business of horse racing, bloodstock and sports that I found interesting reading this week.

Baffert is in Trouble.

We are all shocked and disgusted about the goings on in US. The recent drugs violations with Medina Spirit in the Kentucky Derby. To see the most influential owner put their relationship “on pause” is a big deal. Read the full extent above. If the authorities won’t act its great to see owners taking the initiative to distance themselves from such trainers.

The Preakness.

This is a really interesting read on the world’s 2nd most expensive trophy and the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown of racing in the US.

Racehorse ownership needs a fresh perspective and we believe this type of technology is the answer.

Charlie talks…

The Derby picture is really starting to take shape now with key trials underway. Coolmore in particular have their three year olds hitting top gear now and Bolshoi Ballet was a hugely impressive winner at Leopardstown on Sunday.

More Derby clues will be on offer this week as York hosts its Dante meeting. However it’s the listed fillies stakes on Friday that interests me the most as it sees the return of Snow Lantern who was an impressive maiden winner at Newbury on her reappearance and is expected to take this listed prize on her way to better things.

This is Snow Lantern’s dam (Mother), Sky Lantern, she was a legend of a filly who was one of the Hannon’s best horses.

Do you see the similarities? This is Sky Lantern running on Friday. A mother’s daughter?

Here is mother and daughter back in the field when Snow Lantern was a foal. She is by the mighty Frankel.

Newbury hosts one of the key Group 1 races of the season on Saturday as the Lockinge stakes takes centre stage. Palace Pier looks difficult to oppose. It’s another race on the card, the London Gold Cup handicap that fascinates me. I feel the best bet of the weekend is Dingle for the Richard Hannon yard. This colt looks like he will relish the step up in trip and appeals as a potentially well handicapped colt. 16/1 looks a big price and I feel this will be much shorter on the day.
