Its all about Epsom this weekend as it plays host to the Derby and the Oaks.

The Derby is without doubt the most coveted classic of the lot and is really shaping up to be a cracking contest this year. It’s been a while since I have been this excited about the race as there really looks to be lots of potential contenders. Mac Swiney has been my long term fancy however he really got put in his place by Bolshoi Ballet in his trial earlier this year. Mac Swiney was reported to have been ill that day and showed his true colours when winning the Irish Guineas. The one question mark I have is whether that run in heavy ground so close to the Derby will of left its mark on him. That coupled with the fact that Bolshoi Ballet could also improve plenty from that trial race means Mac Swiney may struggle to contain him. The race is littered with loads of other contenders but for me they will all have to improve to match the form of these two. At a huge price I'm willing to take a chance on Mojo Star for Richard Hannon.

Yes I know a maiden winning the Derby! However on closer inspection he looks to me like a potential huge improver. Based on his two runs so far. They looked like educational days out for this colt. Richard Hannon has quietly always talked about his hopes for this horse. He has kept him on ice while some of his other talked up classic contenders have fallen by the wayside. It is interesting that he is also entered in some other high profile races later in the season. His family lacks stamina but he has shaped like he will improve for the distance like his sire (Derby winner) Sea The Stars.
