Syndicate Update

CG Beach.jpg

Our 2 year old was enjoying a stroll on the beach this week in Co. Down.

The owners received a nice update from Paddy. Shares are flying out all week.

There’s an international flavour to our syndicate with owners from UK and the US grabbing their shares.

Keen to dip their toe in and learn about how a horse is trained in Ireland, they have complimented our updates and private content.

Our first BBT Competition will be launching tonight….

Keep your eyes peeled on our twitter and your inbox.

Thomas talks…The Sole who got the Power

The Globetrotting Sole Power

The Globetrotting Sole Power

5 Time group one winner, competing in 30 group one events and 65 races in total amassing over £2 million in prize money, Sole Power was the horse of a lifetime.

This weeks profile is centered around a horse who was certainly personified by his wonderful connections his owners The Power family (of PaddyPower). His genius and quick whitted trainer Eddie Lynam, along with the thousands of beloved fans in which he provided so much entertainment and hugely rewarding payouts.

A quirky character with blistering speed, Sole Power required the upmost class and composure from his jockey.  Ridden by 11 different pilots throughout his career, he tested the worth of each and every one of them.

Johnny Murtagh quoting before the Kings Stand Stakes “I will either look like a hero, or be sacked after this race”. Racing in dead last, he managed to weave his way through tight gaps and accelerated in the dying strides to win. Racing in that tight position is what made him tick.

A bargain buy at £32,000 as a yearling, he danced every dance across the globe. He became the only horse to run at Meydan’s World Cup night on six different occasions.

2014 was a memorable year for owners The Powers, finishing joint leading owner at Royal Ascot. They won the Kings Stand Stakes on the Tuesday with Sole Power and the Diamond Jubilee on the Saturday with Slade Power, having only two horses in training at the time!

Sole Power was also named horse of the year in 2014.

Taking the decision to geld Sole Power as a 2 year old meant he could not carry out duties as a stallion, yet it certainly allowed him to be purely focused on his job which he was so talented at.

If you want to hear more detail on the greatest Irish sprinter of all time, check out the podcast Horse Racing Heroes. A relatively new idea, the pod focuses on connections and the horse they had the privilege to campaign. No current affairs, no updates, no betting, just great stories about great horses and the great people behind them.

Charlie talks…Weekend Racing

This weekend the main action comes from The Curragh with The Irish Derby on Saturday.

The Derby starts at 1M 4F Marker

High Definition has been labelled a Derby horse since his debut win last year. It was disappointing not to see him line up at Epsom and with Coolmore subsequently falling short there it leaves a doubt in mind about him. One horse who has not only shaped like a Derby horse but has had his form boosted is Lone Eagle. Like High Definition he is also a son of the mighty Galileo. He shaped just “fine” on his first run this year but on his last start he slammed a good yardstick in Yibir. He clearly came on a lot from his seasonal debut where he finished just behind Yibir and subsequent Derby winner Adayar. That form alone should see him go close here and at 9/1 he looks a solid each way bet.

In the closing 2 mile EBF handicap one horse that interests me is Arcadian Sunrise. Knowing connections I'm pretty sure he will have the Galway festival on his agenda, so its hard to know if they will be protecting his flat mark until then. He is my fancy for the Galway hurdle at this stage and it depends if they want to try target the 2 mile amateur flat handicap on the Monday of Galway aswell as the hurdle. Might be best to follow any market signals here.

Meanwhile on Saturday Newcastle holds one of the seasons staying flat handicap highlights the Northumberland plate. Trueshan looks like he will run which will leave a lot of horses running off a low weight. Trueshan will still be hard to beat as he comes here a fresh horse but I'm going to take him on with Keith Dalgleish's Alright Sunshine. He looks on a good mark especially when you take into account his jockey’s three pound claim. Crucially he looked to handle the course when he ran here in a group race last year.Odds of 14/1 look generous and again he looks a solid each way play.

Today at the Curragh sees some interesting maidens and big field handicaps. In the 5.30 7 furlong handicap Prince of Peace and Ice Cold In Alex appeal as two solid each way bets currently 25/1 and 20/1 (Paddy Power who pay 5 places).
