Charlie talks…Weekend Racing

Coral Eclipse day at Sandown this weekend and what a disappointing line up! Normally the first time each year that the classic generation get tested against their elders and this year sees just four runners. Mishriff is the horse to beat however I think he will struggle to give this years French derby winner St Mark's Basilica 10lbs. As impressive as Mishriff has looked so far I believe he has been superbly placed to plunder some key international races since his comprehensive defeat at Ascot on champions day last year, and I think his hype bubble will be burst here.

Mishriff crossing the line in front during the Saudi Cup earlier this year.

On the same card Beat Le Bon is a horse I have highlighted previously and he looks an interesting runner in the Coral Challenge Handicap at 2.25p.m. I thought he ran an excellent race at Royal Ascot and that performance can be upgraded as he was drawn low. The only concern is that connections might be running here with an eye on Goodwood at the end of July. So maybe check the market for any confidence in him.

Today sees plenty of action across Ireland and the UK with racing coming from 7 different courses.

Bellewstown hosts day 2 of its July festival and the 1 mile handicap at 6 p.m has two interesting entries at the time of writing. Take My Hand and Sweet Justice. Both are trained by trainers who like to target this meeting and both horses are on winnable marks and crucially have low draws. Currently priced at 10/1 and 20/1 respectively they should reward each way support and hopefully one of them can hold off a host 3 yr old challengers.

In the 5 furlong handicap at 7 p.m Stanhope makes plenty of appeal. Although carrying top weight he is 18 lbs lower than when winning last year and crucially won here before too. He looked to be running into form on his last start and at 8/1 currently looks overpriced to me with lots in his favour.
