Will Balding and Buick be Crowned?

MOG our 2 year old filly with Patrick Turley in Co. Down got back riding out this week after a setback. The ground has stayed dry which is unusual for this time of year in Ireland, but we hope we can get her back out on the turf for her next start. If the heavens open up we will plan a Dundalk campaign which was our original idea.
Our two yearling purchases arrived in Clare Manning’s Boherguy Stud on Monday to enter the breaking process.
A delicate process of teaching the horse how to steer, stop and ultimately take to a human being on their back, it’s like playschool for young horses.
We are planning a BBT Open Day as we speak, giving people a chance to come see the fillies riding out before they head to Newmarket to their respective trainers.
Details will be released here first.
George Boughey one of our new BBT trainers for next year is in blistering form and helped William Buick to close the gap on Oisin Murphy during the week. The UK jockey championship is looking like a corker right now and will go down to the wire on Champions Weekend this weekend.
Charlie talks…Weekend Racing
British Champions day is finally here and will mark the end of a fascinating flat season in the UK. The trainers title will be decided on the day as Charlie Appleby fields a very strong team to try maintain his lead of around £250k over Andrew Balding. It’s much tighter in the Jockeys championship as Oisin Murphy and William Buick are going head to head and it may also be decided on the day.
Six super contests to access and we start with the Long Distance Cup at 1.25. Lots has been made of the ground on Champions day over the past few years however I think this race it will come down to who is the freshest horse. There is no doubt Trueshan and Stradivarius have been the standouts in this division this year. However both had a hard race over 2 mile 4 furlongs only 2 weeks ago. As a result I’m going to chance Hamish to spring a small surprise here. He ran Trueshan close as a 3 yr old and while it was gutting he missed the Ebor due to the ground not being soft enough he looked an improved horse when romping home against Hukem on his most recent start. He has to prove he will stay this far but I see no reason why he wont and make him a solid each way bet against the two at the head of the market.
From staying to sprinting next with the Champion Sprint Stakes taking place. A case can be made for plenty in this however I think David Evans has just had Rohaan ticking over on his last few starts with this contest in mind(he is two from two over this course and distance). Track, trip and ground will suit him and as long as it was just a one off breaking so slowly the last time he can continue his progress to the top here.
The fillies and mares are under the microscope next and while snowfall will be hard to beat. I really like Invite as an each way bet if all 8 runners line up. She has been steadily progressive and comes here fresher than most and I’m happy to take a chance on her improving to go close here.
While there is no such thing as a two horse race Baaeed and Palace Pier look the two to concentrate on in the Queen Elizabeth II stakes. Palace Pier has been the star in this division all year and while I expect him to be hard to beat I think Baaeed receiving the three pounds and with the promise of more to come can topple him. He has looked very talented so far and while he will need to step up here to beat Palace Pier everything looks in his favour to do so.
The Champion Stakes betting is dominated by Mishriff and Adayar and for good reason. Both of these horses have competed at the top of their class this year and will be hard to beat. However its been a long old season for both and my eye is drawn towards some of the lightly raced three year olds here. Foxes Tales in particular looks a huge price at 66/1 for me. He has been steadily progressive this season and while this is a huge step up for him his price should not be so big. He was giving Dubai Honour 9lbs when beaten a head on good to firm ground and that horse is as low as 5/1 for this contest. He has winning form over course and distance and similar to Rohann earlier you can be assured this race has been on his radar for a while. What a finish it would be for Andrew Balding if he was to walk away with this prize and secure his first trainers title.
The Balmoral handicap finishes the card and what is normally a tricky handicap to solve looks to have a standout contender in the John Gosden trained Sunray Mayor. A slow maturing half brother to stallion superstar Kingman running in a handicap! Need I say no more.
