Charlie talks…Weekend Racing

Cheltenham November for me really signals the jumps season taking off as the Paddy Power Chase one of the first main features of the season takes place at Prestbury park.

The feature event itself looks a cracking line up with plenty of unexposed young chasers taking on some well seasoned Cheltenham specialists.

Manofthemountain is going to be my selection here as he ticks plenty of boxes. He is a 2nd season chaser who has form over the course and distance and should be cherry ripe for this after his seasonal reappearance. I believe he is overlooked slightly in the betting as his trainer has never won this race before. However Emma Lavelle knows exactly what it takes to win these competitive handicaps and the fact this horse went over fences so soon tells me they feel he has plenty of progress to come. Odds of 25/1 look more than generous to me.

Pontresina in the 1.05pm is a little risky at 40/1. However based on her win and fall last year I can’t believe she should be such a price. She was sold for 4k out of Oliver Sherwood’s yard afterwards and has since made a nice reappearance for her new trainer Ben Lund. Ben has only had a few runners so far but has trained a winner and while the jockey lacks experience if she can get this mare into a rhythm I believe she can run a huge race from the foot of the weights.

OnagatheringStorm looks to be on an interesting mark for the listed handicap hurdle. She shaped really well here on her last start and looked like she would come on plenty for the run. She has to turn the form around with Dragon Bones but I believe she can rates a solid each way bet at 15/2.

Punxsutawney Phil makes his handicap hurdles debut in the 3.25pm its hard to gauge how good he is but he impressed me on his latest start and I believe can win from this mark. He win his bumper impressively and I believe this extra distance will suit him. Again looks overpriced around 18/1 and should go close here off a nice weight

Where’s Maude Gone ran really well in a listed bumper at Aintree on her last start and looks overpriced in the bumper at Cheltenham. She actually stumbled quite badly that day and otherwise might of finished a little closer. I know connections rate her highly and 7/1 looks a big price up against others ahead of her in the betting who have yet to race in this grade.

Horses to follow:

Onagatheringstorm 2.50  - Cheltenham - Saturday
