I Think It’s Actually Coming Home
Newsletter #61
George talks…
I haven’t been swept up by the World Cup fever just yet.
This tournament felt a little off. I personally think it’s not right to be playing a World Cup when outside it’s dark, cold and wet. The World Cup is for the summer, only.
As an Irishman, we are genetically predisposed to dislike the UK and specifically England. In recent years, this has changed to distain. With half my extended family of cousins, and a little shy of half of my close family living and working in England this has been dialled down to friendly banter. For my business career in food trading I’ve travelled the length and breath of the UK and can call many of the folk I have met, done business with and talk to everyday of every week, friends.
As an Irishman I actually like England, if the little Emerald Isle succumbed to the rising tides of climate change, the UK would be where I’d flee to. Yes, even post Brexit.
England are now through to the quarter finals. From what I’ve seen of the team I think, it’s finally coming home. I’m personally thrilled if it does.
With the next few important game in mind, we are concocting something similar to what we did during the Guineas. Keep an eye on announcements during the week.
Winter Syndicate Trip
Last weekend, we descended on a cold but beautiful Newmarket for our end of season trip. We began proceedings with the news that my car for the day wouldn’t start, and didn’t start for the rest of the day either. After a few quick phonecalls, I was rescued. We met Kevin Philippart de Foy on Warren Hill, where we were greeted by the most beautiful rising sun.
Watching CANADIAN FIRE saunter up the gallops, our confidence was high heading to Lingfield last week for her second start in handicap company. Stepped up in trip to 7 furlongs for the first time, she didn’t show any of her usual exuberance throughout the race. She tamely went out like a light in the final furlong, bitterly disappointing. She came out of the race perfectly, we will enter her up over the next couple of weeks. A drop back to six furlongs and possibly headgear to reignite the spark that we know is there are changes we will make.
Back to the trip, after a chat with Kevin following CANADIAN FIRE’S gallop we then headed to the yard for a cup of coffee where we took a team photo, horse included.
After a quick tour of Machall Place Stables, we headed to George Boughey’s yard, where ATTRAZIONE was on the trotting list after her gallant second place finish the week previous. She was bouncing at home on the gallops and looked very pleased in her skin.
With everyone’s stomachs grumbling, we buried a full English breakfast and washed it down with a coffee.
After the cappuccino settled, we hopped into the car and made tracks towards Shadwell to see BAAEED. A beautiful specimen of a horse, I was told, because we missed him! The horse was paraded every hour, my group was 20 minutes late.
Instead of hanging around we just headed to Tattersalls. We pulled out several foals and went through the different conformation points and what makes a foal interesting from a pinhooker’s point of view.
After more coffee and an hour spent at the side of the parade ring, we called it a day.
To cap off the day, my flight was delayed home for 2 hours, as I sat and watched some boring World Cup match I had the time to recap mentally on what was a brilliant day out.
Sweepstakes
While the beautiful game takes centre stage in Qatar over the rest of the month of December, we have launched a game ourselves.
On top of the BBT Racing Club we have been playing the BBT Sweepstakes every weekend.
We came up with this idea, with the intention to have people watching all the top class racing from the weekend, every weekend. If you become a member of the club or purchase a share and become a syndicate owner, you can then play the sweepstakes.
We select 5 races from the weekend’s action for you to choose one horse per race.
Winner = 3pts
Second =2pts
Third = 1pt
Over the last 3 weeks we have given out over €1500 in prizes to the sweepstakes winners, with prizes all the way down to 5th place.
This weekend we will be kicking it off with meetings at Cheltenham & Punchestown.
This week coming…
Punchestown - John Durkan Memorial Chase
Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale (P2P)
