Newsletter #50

George talks…

It’s the middle of July, the weather is scorching and Boris has left the building. Farmers are protesting in Holland and diesel is €2.18.99 / litre here in Ireland.

But this is the 50th BTT newsletter, the July Cup is today and we have a bus load of owners down at Warren Hill to see their 2 year olds.

To start though, lets talk about the sales.

The Tattersalls July sale was a record breaker this past week at Park Paddocks, Newmarket.

I read one stat that Thursday the 2nd of a 3 day sale, posted a 99% clearance rate. I have never seen such a figure in all my years going to the horse sales, all over the world.

Even in these inflationary times (yes, I had to write the word somewhere!), people want to buy horses!

This is very much a social horse sale. Breeders aren’t busy at this time of year, trainers are around because the racing is on. Everyone has a bit of a party each night after racing. But like all sports teams, some owners and trainers are reshuffling their string. It’s the prime time to buy a racing prospect, bang in the middle of the season. If you buy the right horse you have plenty of time left to map out a plan and go win some races.

More on how we fared out below.

There’s always a very international buying bench at Tattersalls July, but this year it was even more pronounced than usual.

These are the players driving the record trade and that unbelievable clearance rate. USA, Australia, and the Arab nations all contributed to the sale this week. These nations have more prizemoney. They can swoop in and buy our best prospects, ship them to their racing jurisdictions and win bigger prizes that pay for the investment. I’m like a broken record on prizemoney in the UK, I won’t bore you any further!

What we do have in the UK is prestige. The July festival is a perfect manifestation of what makes UK racing so glittering and glamourous. The town of Newmarket has been flooded with racegoers since Thursday and there was a real canrnival atmospehere to the town. The weather, crowd and top class racing is brand UK!

Into the nittty gritty of the racing season.

The July cup is a real stallion making race, the clash of Perfect Power and the Aussie horse, Astorius will be a stallion making dash. Astorious is owned by the high flying China Horse club in a syndicate with leading Australian stud farm Newgate Stud, ran by Henry Field.

Henry Field is one of the most influential and dynamic young stud owners in the world in my opinion. The Newgate Farm story is only getting started.

If you have 20 minutes, I recommend watching this interview with Henry Field.

The season now is in full swing. 2 year old maidens are now out to 7 furlongs and the 2 year old nurseries have started. These handicaps for 2 year olds give horses who were struggling in maidens an opportunity to get their head in front and build confidence.

Names, Names, Names

Our first 2 year old was named this week. The Holy Roman Emperor filly is now called Attrazione. One owner came up with the name and in a tight vote amongst owners, it was deemed the winner. Coincidentally, the filly’s breeder is Italian, and the name is Italian for attraction.

The filly is working up Warren Hill every morning with George Boughey’s string, and she seems to be garnering his attraction. As we expected she is taking her time to come to hand and we are in no rush. She is building towards the 6 furlong Tattersalls Ireland Sales race at the Curragh in September.

Attrazione canters up Warren Hill, Newmarket.

After Siouxnami was refused by the BHA we are awaiting Canadian Fire as the name of our Sioux Nation filly.

As we predicted she would be much more forward than Attrazione. The filly is really pleasing Kevin in her work and we have July 18th pencilled in as her first day on the race track.

Listen to what Kevin had to say about her first piece of work and watch the clip.

New Horse

Back to talking about sales, we said we would briefly mention that we picked up a fun horse for the the syndicate by none other than Frankel.

We promised owners that we would aim to select a horse that is ready to run and could mix it every month on the racetrack.

We have a really exciting campaign in mind for this horse.

We purchased him in conjunction with George Boughey and his agent Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock.

These two partnered up on a horse in training which ended up winning at Royal Ascot this year, none other than Golden Gates Stakes winner, Missed the Cut.

If we had a fraction of the success of that horse with the same team we would be thrilled.

Details of the sydnciate will be relased here first as usual, expect an email Sunday night or Monday morning.

There will be limited shares as this horse already has a group of partners, if you would like to reserve a share before they go on sale, send us back a reply to this email. The share price will be in the range of €250 - €300 / share.

Next week I will also have all the lowdown from our Owner’s day at Newmarket today, as I write these words the guys are down watching the horses on Warren Hill, later they head to the July Cup.

All the best,

George
