Mid-Season Stable Tour

George talks…

I’m going to start first with Galway.

If you have never been to the Galway races it’s very hard to describe in words how raucous and rebellious this race meeting is.

I read a quote from an Irish economist “Galway, it’s as good a barometer of Irish society’s prosperity as any government survey or GDP figure”.

If Galway is good, Ireland is good!

Judging by what I saw on the TV this week, Galway has been electric this year.

A wonderful tale I heard during the week struck me.

Maurice Burns is a regular visitor to BBT trainer Paddy Turley’s yard. Paddy trained Dunum for Maurice and Michael Mccartan who he bred the horse with.

They brought the Ivawood colt to the sales in 2019 as a yearling and refused to sell the horse for the E2800 bid. They put the horse into training with Paddy who nurtured him throughout his 2 and 3 year old career.

In 2022, Paddy switched the focus of his yard to solely training and producing point to point horses and recommended that the guys switch DUNUM to the Curragh yard of Natalie Lupini.

To back track here, Maurice would visit and still does visit Paddy’s yard every week.

One festival that lights him up according to Paddy, is Galway.

The owner-breeders of DUNUM have been going to the festival since they were children (approx 30- 40 years).

In their eyes a runner, never mind a winner would be just magic.

Step up DUNUM.

The horse blossomed as he matured into a gorgeous 4 year old gelding. He had ran three times for Natalie Lupini in the lead up to Galway and racked up three wins.

Now high in the handicap he made his way to Galway, Day 1, Tuesday. The lads were just delighted to be there.

A Galway runner.

Well he went and won one more!

I haven’t got any video evidence of the scenes in the minutes, hours and days after but apparently they were off the charts.

To many, a small handicap at the festival could be meaningless but to some it’s everything. A small owner-breeder combination, dreaming, plotting, hoping. Win on what is the biggest stage to them.

That’s what the sport is all about.

Running parallel to Galway is the Qatar Goodwood festival.

An awkward track to navigate with plenty of hard luck stories.

Oscula bolted up for BBT trainer George Boughey landing a competitive Group 3. Baaeed was scintillating from the 3 to 2 pole putting in a Sea the Stars-esque performance in the Sussex Stakes.

Later in the week Royal Scotsman upheld the already impressive Coventry form. The most impressive performance for me was from the now Leger favourite, New London. He powered home under champion jockey elect William Buick and seemed to me like the extra distance of the final Classic of the year will be a plus for him.

Goodwood and Galway are major social events of the summer calendar, during Newmarket on July Cup weekend we held one of our own.

We welcomed owners, newsletter subscribers and some new faces on a whistle stop tour of our horses in Newmarket. A fantastic day with fantastic weather, giving people a chance to meet us and meet their horses and see them in action.

As many of you couldn’t make the day I decided to do an online tour.

A brief 7 minute watch, apologies for the technical difficulties in the middle, I’m still learning how to use my new computer!

Check out the stable tour here.

All our horses have different profiles and are in full training, there are a few shares available in each.

Check out their shares pages here.

Lastly, we are attending the Syndicate Showcase day at Haydock Racecourse Sunday August 7th. It’s a chance for prospective owners to come and meet us and see what we are about. A great initiative organised by the Great British Racing.

All the best,

George
