We are Back
Newsletter #53
George talks…
It’s been quite a while since I last wrote an edition of this newsletter.
What’s the reason the cadence has been disrupted? The eldest of the Brownsbarn triumvirate happened to drag family and friends to Bulgaria for his wedding. I’m the oldest brother, so I had to write and deliver a best man speech. Hence I depleted my writing reserves on embarrassing him with said speech, in the end I embarrassed myself even more!
Thomas and myself are back in action, as Charlie jets off to Turkey on his honeymoon. My first job to complete when I came back is to write to you guys.
Firstly, I want to thank you for the reaction to the video stable tour that I did for everyone on the last newsletter. It’s a while ago now, over three weeks, but I’m still getting the odd email about it. It’s a big bonus when people take the time to give feedback, both positive and negative. What we think we are doing right isn’t always right, so when we hear feedback, we analyse it, and importantly act on it.
If you have any ideas on how we can improve this newsletter, our social channels, our website, send me back an email, we love to hear input from subscribers.
Since our last edition, there’s been a lot going on.
We had the Shergar Cup, a weekend I’d rather forget. I’ve never watched one of those races over the years, the meeting just doesn’t capture my enthusiasm. The Racing League is on our screens, again. This idea of trying to “premiership” racing, doesn’t work in my book. I commend people for trying to do something different, but the concept doesn’t give me any impetus to watch racing. The hope is that it will do so for newbies. If’s that’s the case then it will be a success in my eyes.
Another racing series flying it’s flag this summer has been The Sunday Series. These meetings stage better prize money and from what I gather look to sell a Sunday day out to punters. Brownsbarn were present for the syndicate ownership day at The Haydock Sunday Series meet in August, it was fantastic to meet up with people who were looking to get involved and I want to say hello to the new subscribers and owners who we had the pleasure to meet there.
We met a lot of people at Haydock who were racing for their first time.
Back in August our 2 year old filly ATTRAZIONE had an eventful first day at the racecourse. From start to finish the whole race was a mess for her, it was just a run to put a line through. She steps out today for her second race for Team George Boughey at Wolverhampton 5.16pm. The 5 furlongs will again be too sharp for her and the all-weather won’t be ideal. We are hoping she travels into the race and runs through the line. She’s a filly to keep an eye on over a longer trip in nursery company. Anything this filly does at 2 will be a bonus, as our thought process when we bought her was that she will step forward from 2 to 3 like her pedigree and physique suggests.
Speaking of 3 year olds, the last time I wrote this newsletter COUNTERATTACK had no handicap mark and his private parts were intact. In racing things can change fast. Our Frankel 3 year old ran back at the start of August and was given a mark of 54 by the handicapper. As per our plan he has now been gelded and is back in George Boughey’s yard in full training with a view to running in the coming weeks.
As we perceived the horse is now sold out.
To cap off his first week back in full work, one of his owners figured out he loves polos.
Polos are the last thing we will be giving CANADIAN FIRE. We had to back off her for a few weeks back at the beginning of August. As you can see in the picture below she enjoyed the few lazy days and packed on the pounds. Periods like this while a pain and frustrating for her owners can often times do wonders for the horse. CANADIAN is back now in full training for the last 14 days, she was race fit before her holiday and it won’t take much to get her back ready to roll again. She has been entered at Chelmsford next week, we will see what Kevin thinks come declarations time.
That’s a quick recap on our horses for you guys. We are in the middle of yearling sales season as we speak. We will send out a special newsletter with our ideas and thoughts regarding the sales in the coming days.
Lastly, I want to give you all a PS on one horse that lit up the York Ebor meeting for me.
Yes BAAEED.
I was lucky enough to follow flat racing religiously when we had FRANKEL and SEA THE STARS. I was at Keeneland when AMERICAN PHAROAH won the Breeders Cup Classic after annexing the Triple Crown. We have a very special horse in front of us right now and we all must enjoy him. I hope he goes for the Arc as had been touted. I still watch the YouTube of Mick Kinane on SEA THE STARS getting up after pulling double throughout the race.
PSS . I ask all of our subscribers collectively to pray to the weather gods that the ground stays good in Longchamp for BAAEED!
All the best,
George
