Medal of Glory had a quiet week this week after her run at Naas. We entered her into a Dundalk maiden over 7 furlongs but instead of running there we have changed plans to run her at Bellewstown’s September festival next week.

Two Year Old Roster for 2022

We were active at the Tattersalls September yearling sales at Newmarket this week. Working the yards we had a list of 10 fillies that we really liked physically as athletes. When buying at our budget we have to work off a philosophy. Most mares who are bred have the ability to produce one good horse. At our budget we would never buy an athlete that would be related to a good horse, because the athletic ones would cost too much.

We focus on finding the filly that will make the mare who hasn’t produced anything of note just yet. Using our team to find the athlete, like us humans, we all have an athlete in the family. We look for the equine equivalent.

We aren’t the only racing stable setting out to do this and a lot of good judges were on the fillies within our list.

We loved a Garswood filly who fell for 60,000£ to Ross Doyle most likely bought for Richard Hannon. We were taken by a Farhh filly from a great nursery in Knockanainey Stud, that made 100,000£.

We were underbidder on a Muhaarar filly who made 18,000£, a Make Believe filly for 16,000£. When purchasing horses you must put values on the horses before you enter the bidding. The auction process is set up to hit you emotionally and gear you towards spending more and more money. We stick to our valuations and except for one or two bids above we keep our bidding tight and unemotional.

We managed to secure one filly from the sale.

A filly by Holy Roman Emperor out of the Teofilo mare Maoineas. We valued her at 20,000 - 25,000£ so we were delighted to purchase her for 17,500£.

We have added a new trainer to our roster and are delighted to have George Boughey to manage her racing career. He was keen to train the filly after enjoying success with the Holy Roman Emperor colt Bolton Abbey.

Charlie talks…Weekend Racing

We are treated to a feast of Group action this weekend with the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and Middle Park Stakes heading up Newmarket's Cambridgeshire meeting and the Group 2 Beresford Stakes taking place at the Curragh.

Lots of potentially interesting fillies line up for the Cheveley Park Stakes however Sacred Bridge looks the most interesting of them all. She has won all 4 of her starts so far however its the way she has been winning them that marks her out as a top class filly. She will be very tough to beat here and one at a larger price that may get involved is the Ballydoyle trained filly Tenebrism. She has only had one start and takes a steep rise from a maiden to a Group 1 but she looked classy when she won her maiden back in March and may have progressed in the interim.

The Middle Park Stakes looks a strong line-up with several closely matched rivals. However Perfect Power looks the one to beat after his dominant win in France on his latest start. He turned the form around in no uncertain terms with Asymmetric then after finishing behind him at Goodwood and looks progressive. The Irish challengers look closely matched and HMS Endeavour could be the most interesting of them if he lines up. He looked to make heavy weather of a conditions race at Dundalk recently but is bred to be decent with time and distance and might relish the quick pace of a race of this nature.

Then the cavalry charge that is the Cambridgeshire which looks as difficult as ever to solve with a host of potentially well handicapped horses taking part. Uncle Bryn has been well found in the market and looks a similar type to recent winners John Gosden has had of this race. However one I quiet like the look of here is Naval Commander for Robyn Brisland. He sneaks in here at the bottom of the weights and looks like a horse who will improve for a race of this nature. He looks to have plenty of improvement in him and the addition of cheekpieces should also help eke out more.
